The best time to surf in Portugal

Portugal is gaining fame for the consistent waves all year round.

Every year the world best surfers and the new rising stars fly over Portugal from January till December to compete and surf the best waves that Portugal has to offer.

A country with less than 700km length of coastline, makes it very accessible to drive north and south chasing the best surf conditions.

Portugal’s geography benefits of their privilege exposition to the Atlantic Ocean that delivers super consistent swells all year round.

There are plenty of surf contests in Portugal throughout the year. From the (1) Portuguese WSL (World Surf League) stage at Peniche in February, to the (2) WQS (world qualifying serious) contests during the summer (Santa Cruz, Ribeira dilhas, Costa Caparica, and Azores Pro), Portuguese waves are always surprising us. (3)The “Perfect chapter”, a competition in the winter where some of the world best tube riders are invited for a contest with no specific date. The competition is on hold for a 3 months’ period and when the conditions are validated the surfers are notified so they can show up on time. As for the (4) big waves season, Nazaré challenges those who want to surf the biggest waves in the world from October until February.

For some of the world best surfers, Portugal became home during the year. As an example we have the Japanese surfer, Kanoa Igarashi,  the Italian, Leonardo Fioravanti, as well the Portuguese’s Frederico Morais and Nicolau Von Rupp, both living and surfing around the best surf spots around Lisbon (Praia Grande – Sintra; Coxos – Ericeira; Supertubos – Peniche; Guincho – Cascais).

Sintra, where The Peak House is based, is known as the Portuguese area where you can surf 365 days a year due its unique exposition to the predominant northwest swell. Especially in the summer where few other places have consistent waves, in this area you will always find a full range of surf spots.

For begginers the best time to surf in Portugal is in the summer (from May untill August), however, Sintra has beaches with all year round conditions for not only beginners but also advance level.
