Surf around Lisbon

For the last 15 years, surf has had a huge impact on the tourism of Portugal.

With more than 600km of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, there are plenty of surf spots for every surf level, from the beach breaks – either foamy waves for the beginners or some good wedges for those who are looking for some funny nuggets, to the point breaks with more consistent waves.

Lisbon, as the main city and capital of Portugal has a privileged location on the Atlantic coastline. 30 minutes away from the center you will be able to find many world class waves where the best surfers in the world come every year to compete.

At 35 minutes North of Lisbon you will get to Ericeira (region “Saloia”), a fisherman village that has been growing for the last 15 years due to the rising demand of a new way of living, more connected with the nature and the ocean, by surfers from the north and east of Europe. Mostly known for the point breaks as Coxos, Ribeira d´ilhas or Pedra Branca, Ericeira has been playing a major role in the development of the surf industry in Portugal.

Closer to Lisbon (south from Ericeira) you can find the historical and mystical village of Sintra, located within the Sintra-Cascais Nature Reserve Park. This region offers the perfect combination for those who are looking for some quietness within the countryside but who don´t want to miss out on the new trends that Lisbon has to offer.

For those who are also interested in the Portuguese history and culture, there are plenty of attractions around this area where you can immerse yourself and truly experience how our ancestors lived, such as the Palácio da Pena (Pena Palace), Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle), Palácio de Monserrate (Monserrate Palace) and others.

Praia Grande is the most well-known beach break in the area. The unique exposition to the northwest, predominant swell in Portugal, brings to this surf spot consistent swell all year around. In the summer when the swells are smaller in most of the spots around Lisbon, Praia Grande is a must to go. Very popular within the young Portuguese talents while training for the European summer competitions.

The emerging of the new working approach opened new opportunities and contributed to a new era of travelers. Due to the possibility of working remotely, people can now spend longer periods of time away and live new experiences.

Sintra has been benefiting from this new type of travelling due to its unexplored coastline and world class waves, appreciated by those looking to improve their surf level as well as making the most out of a simple living within the nature and the Ocean.
